Picked up Jake after school yesterday and we drove to Hayward to race in the Cable Classic today. We pretty much drove in the line of heavy rain all the way over. Was expecting a wet course but it dried up nicely and the conditions were pretty much perfect. There were some snow showers early and very light dusting accumulating on a few areas!! Temp at the start was 34 degrees.
Rolled out from Lakewoods in good position. Was in top 10 and stayed that way most of the race. TJ Woodruff pulled away about 15 minutes in to solo for the victory. A group of 10 of us consisting of Matt Kurke, Charly Tri, Sam Oftedahl, Hollywood, Chris Fisher, Barry and Tungseth and a few others stayed together pretty much until things split apart on the little bit of "true singletrack" on the course. I was with Hollywood and Fisher near the end on the last part of singletrack. Hollywood was rolling a new 29er and I was sitting behind on the tight and twisty. He made a small dab, I went around and got a small gap. When we hit the forest road again I stayed out in front for a short while and then sat up to let Fisher, H-wood, and the other rider bridge up and we rode the rest of the race in to the finish. Fisher and I took turns the last three miles pulling the other two and with 200 meters to go, H-wood made a nice move to get to the very short section of singletrack and hold on to finish 6th and Fisher and I ended up 9th and 8th respectively. Jake was given the number 666!!! He did the 18 mile race. He had a nice start and eventually pulled away, riding out in front with a 2 minute lead he said. Then he got bored with all the gravel and forest road and hopped on some singletrack that wasn't part of his course. So he won the "21 mile race" and probably finished in the 20's for the 18 mile race. I rode back on the course to see him finish and when I saw him he flashed the peace sign and was smiling/laughing so it was all good. Sam got cold feet like the rest of us but finished nicely in 4th. We hooked up with him for the carpool. Harmon HILLS!! tomorrow!
