On the way out to CO, I noticed on the map the high point of ND. If you would of asked me where the highpoint was, I would of said in western ND in the badlands but I did not know the exact location. It sparked my interest and on the way home I asked Jake and Jack if they would be up in trying to get to the highpoint, White Butte and it was the goal of Monday. I took a 150 photos and was hard to narrow it down to 5 or 6 so a bit overboard but one of the cooler places I have been with the bike, under the unique circumstances.
We stopped in Bowman, ND, about what appeared to be 30 miles south of the high point and figured Big J's would be a good place to ask the locals.
We settled in the stool section and these were the folks I had to pick from. I ended up asking the guy in the white hat with the red rim. He said "yeah, you can get up there but didn't provide any details". Asking around everyone else, pretty much got the same answer.
Headed north and thought we had a good spot to venture in but no trespassing signs had us thinking otherwise. Called the number on the post but no answer.
Drove north to Amidon and stopped at the only store in town. Knowing "for sure, eh, right on, labatts, bush meant woods and a little bit about the shield" figured I could make it in the store. Got directions nicely on a piece of paper and we ventured through some fields.
Noticed a sign. Looking south again, not very impressive I guess.
Mailbox for donations to continue on.
At the end of a field there was a fence, no signage and a cattle path that was pretty fun singletrack to ride up. Jack hiked which was just as fast since it was pretty steep in spots and Jake and I re rode a few sections.
"Bush" to the west.
Near the top.
Marker.
At the top.
Heading back down.
Heading down we went towards the buttes that were not the actual highpoint but looked like some sweet terrain to explore.
Very cool formations all over the place.
Jake was freaking me out on this section.
Cool stuff all over the place.
Didn't expect cactus.
Western ND is fascinating. Geologically speaking, unique to the world. Great adventure and cooles part was no on else, no signs. Very raw feeling.
