One of the biggest mountain bike events on the calendar was on tap this past weekend...the Wisconsin Off Road Series WORS Cup which was also part of the National PRO XCT series. The Jr race was a qualifier for the world championship team. Jake, Lars Ellefson and I met up Friday morning to head over after catching Jon's game early that morning as he was playing in a tourney at Blaine. Jack and Jens were wrapping up a "camp invention" where they stayed with Jonell's sister all week but I missed seeing them since they were at camp when I got there.

Race day was hot and humid. Hotter than anything we have experienced this year up north here. The week leading to race day, it was cool enough for arm warmers etc. a few of the days. The heat was definitely a factor but Jake made the adjustments best he could and rode a solid race, just missing the fifth spot to a Expo rider. Not sure if it is the lyme or what but the weather on Saturday pretty much wiped me out. Brendan Moore stayed with us Friday night and was heading back on Saturday after his race so I decided to go back with him. I was bummed to miss the short track races on Sunday as those are some of the most fun to watch.

Cat 1 riders post race. With lap times around 20 minutes and four laps, doing water hand ups for Jake, Sam, Eric, Kuzzy, Lars, and Peter, made the race go by fast for sure. I heard nothing but great compliments on the course and venue and definitely would be a great spot to host the US MTB Championships. With Champs being held out east or west it would be nice to have it in the Midwest for two years. Don and the WORS crew run a series like no one else in the country and set the benchmark high for sure.
3D rider getting the elbows out in the Pro men. A must in the tight and fast action.
Keeping cool and hydrated key. A lot of riders opting out of pouring water or ice on their backs but the top 10 riders in the PRO men taking maximum advantage of the opportunity to cool down. Keeping the core temp down can make a huge difference in a race like this. Todd Wells had a pantyhose filled with ice he would put on his neck each time through the feed zone.
Last week when I was working in the woods cutting trees and what not, I got bit by some weird bug. I didn't think anything of it like I do with every other bug bite unless a tick of course. First few days it was a little red around the bite but Friday, that night and Saturday this line started to run from the bite area. By last night it had run all the way up to my arm pit and was getting wider. This morning my arm was numb and getting warm. I showed it to the camp nurse here and she said go in right away. So I went in and doc said a shot of a high dose of antibiotics in the buttocks and 10 days of oral. She said 5 years ago, if someone came in like that they would of been hospitalized. The line indicating an infection and who knows what would happen. Probably explains the lightheadedness on Saturday and Sunday. Whatever, the meds should take care of any issue. I had to wait 45 min after the shot to make sure I didn't have a reaction. Thanks Jonell for being there. Waiting there were a lot of people coming and going and thankful for the health I have.

Advice for you Jay: beware of bugs. Also two questions: 1. What's your theory on why pro riders kept their jerseys zipped up during the race? 2. Why the difference in doctor reaction to such a bite between five years ago and today? -- Sandberg

With 70k of trail to clear, it's just part of the package. 1) To provide more cooling on the descents. 2) Shot antibiotic administered didn't exist 5-7 years ago? BTW, I'm having trouble getting the Johnson going, think you can come over and take a look at it? HA! Have a safe and happy 4th JS.
