A close call with a bald eagle last night, coming home from the cities, but we are still alive. I prefer to call the day longest with light like the Swedes and Finns, Midsummer! Like the mailman said last week, if I have to wear a sweatshirt 5 days out of the week, I am just fine with that. With school being out for over a month, summer has been full force, regardless if the weather feels like it or not. We have been enjoying the days long with light late enjoying time outside as much as possible. We have scaled back on the activities this year, no soccer, no baseball, no swim lessons, having fun in the back yard. The kids keeping busy with things they like most.

Jake continues to have an excellent start to the mtb racing season and enjoying spending time with his girlfriend Jess. Previous weekend Jake and I went down to Afton Alps ski area where he took his second top five finish as a expert, racing in the heat for over two hours. That time racing is too long for preparing what should be shorter races on the National scene but we have adjusted the training accordingly, doing more motorpacing this year and some hill work on the area big hills. Having races near 2 hours does not make fast mountain bikers and a reason why the Euros are "fast". The world cups in Euro and the Swiss series races which have some of the top riders in the world, are sometimes only a hour and the battle for position is elbow to elbow, all out racing all the time. Fast racing makes fast racers! Anyways, Jonell, Jess and Jake hit up the big National race in Wisconsin this past weekend and he tallied a top five finish in his age group. The top finishers were outside of the Midwest coming from CA, and TX. Great course and excellent organization and race time right around 1 1/2 hours which was good. Sunday Jake did the double hitting the sweet course in Red Wing at Memorial Park. One of the reasons to come back was for the course. After a solid start, racing the day before caught up a bit but hung on over a solid field to take 6th. The next big race will be Nationals in Idaho and focusing on speed the next few weeks.
Jens has pretty much been Jens. DL ran a fantastic hockey camp last week and both he and Jon had a great time. One more hockey tourney this summer for Jens in late July.
Jack was at bible camp last week, meeting lots of friends and having a great time. Jack will be going to Italian camp for two weeks later this summer. He went one week last year and had a blast and is up for going for two this time around.
Last weekend Jon played in the International Cup with the CanAm team he plays with. They were a little overmatched to the other teams as they outscored the teams 75-2 en route to taking the championship. The first game was 32-0!! Never seen anything like it. Overall the tourney was interesting....but all good. Two more tournaments in August in tough tournaments will be good. He really enjoys playing on this team, especially with the Canadian players. Half the team is from mostly southern Ontario and the other half are northern MN kids. Jon finished up his summer hockey season with the Moorhead based team last weekend. They didn't have the won/loss record like the previous season but they played some tough competetion and the bottom line, they had fun and the kids have made a close bond with each other.
On the way home we stopped in Elk River for some eats (Jonell also got carded for the third time this year) and checked out the steady flowing Mississippi. Back on the road all good until near Verndale, a bald eagle flew up from the road eating some roadkill and hit the wind shield. Amazingly, the window was fine but the eagle not so good. Called it in and dnr came. They called me back 45 minutes later to report the eagle looked okay and will recover in a recovery center.
