Duck hunting opened up two weekends but too much going on to get out. There was a lot of shooting going on in the area and reports from the locals were mixed. Haven't really seen many birds around other than Hamden slough which surprisingly was still holding good water all through the dry spell. It hasn't been cold enough up north to kick the northern birds down and the local pickings this year is slim. Regardless, I still like to go out, I don't think I have missed a season the past 34 years since I first went out as a 8-9 yr old. The whole process of driving out to the landing, paddling out to the island, setting up decoys and watching the sun come up is worth it. Having the kids out is even better. Got out with the kids one day last week than took Hudson out Sunday morning for a short bit to have him take in the scene.
Watching the sun come up. Wind in the face, bluebird day, not good for ducks coming in but worth watching the sun come up.
Off the point of the Island.
Paddling back in.
Retrieving a errant decoy.
Leaving the blind and heading back. The best scenario for us is a west or northwest wind but can't always get out when that happens.
Group of otters swimming by and fun to watch them put on a show.
I had a 45 minute open window the other day and thought I would take out Hudson so he could take in the sights, sounds and smells (and tastes)
Chilled and ready to go home after playing around.
Little skeptical on the canoe part but he did well.
Sunday Jens had hockey in Moorhead and drive by rear of arena and zamboni guy is stringing decoys in between resurfacing shifts. Good stuff.
