Jon's team ended up going 1-1 on the second day of the IP Cup, winning the last game. Team started to come around finding a bit of chemistry. Had the bike along and snuck a few Andy Hampsten (AH from Grand Forks originally) type rides in. No tourneys for at least a month now. Looking at the schedule rest of the summer, should work out pretty good for bike races and hockey tourneys not conflicting.
After the game, the Zamboni was resurfacing and stopped dead at the far end. Guy ran out of propane. In 30 years of playing and watching hockey, never seen that happen. Watching part of all the games over the two days, there were 3-4 players that stood out. Jonell had me circle their names on the rosters and will be interesting to see in 4-5 years if they are on a scouting list.
The "moms" catching the action the on the second day. Top shelf. Happy Mothers Day.
This week has been a great time to be in the woods. No bugs, pleasant temps. We finished up planting the seedlings this year. There is a mom and a daughter from Missouri that travel around the states planting trees and they planted about 2000 for us. You want to talk green and getting it done with no sugarcoating.... they probably do 6-8 thousand trees a week by hand. I pulled about 500 aside and Jonell and I planted those this week. Mainly areas where the wind blows off lakes and drifts the trails. I have planted here before obviously but the lack of sun and northern exposure and maybe dry years has been tough to get things going. When we were finishing up it started downpouring and with good moisture content in the soil right now, they should take off nicely.
Put the dock in and pretty much under water. Pulled it back a bit and later Jon and I went down where it flows out of the lake to check out the spots were the beavers have it dammed. The water was flowing okay but we helped get things going, spending a hour or so. I think the neighbors were on beaver patrol this spring looking at the signs left behind.
Went back down at sunset to see if any beavers came back. There was one but he wasn't concerned about the water flowing. Instead he was going to town on a branch and being down wind, he didn't pick up my scent and was extremely cool watching him as other wildlife was zipping by.
On "normal" years there is a channell of water flowing in between the marsh area and continues to the culvert. You can see how high the water is this year. Pretty much record level. For the record, yours truly was the first in the family to jump in the lake. Helped getting cooked in the sauna first.
Jake finished blowing out the singletrack and I hit all the ski trail sections with the mower. The riding is about as good as it gets. Everything is tacky, a few mud spots to keep it real, perfect temps and no blood thirsty winged critters. I have been pretty much gorilla glued to the mtb saddle the last three weeks with only one road bike ride. A good 7 day block last week with 18 hours punched in.
One night Jake came back saying he was stuck. The way he first described it, I thought he was hung up on the steep hill on Lucky's Loype, the singletrack classic ski trail. Drove out there and saw the green truck in the middle of the woods. He drove down the trail. It was a gutsy move for sure and a first which says alot since I did some stupid stuff in high school with vehicles in the woods. Anyways, there was no way I was going to take another pickup down there. If you look back down the trail in the background it is amazing he made it as far as he did. I had to get the skid steerer. I had to take out the tree to the right so I could drive the truck through and amazingly made it through the rest of the trail. It was a bit dicey in spots because not having 4x4 on the green truck, I had to carry some uncomfortable speed on the uphills where only a inch margin of error on each side.
Jake hooked up with Matt and Steve Wenzel last night for some riding. Would of been fun to join them but Jonell and I on a overnight for a short getaway for Moms Day.
