One of the big events last week was the Science Fair. Any K-5 student can partake. Everything you need to know is pretty much at the science fair. What chemicals make the best volcano, what paper plane flies the farthest, how electricity works, which chewing gum holds flavor the longest etc.
Jack did an experiment on how polluted water affects plant life. It was plan b since Jens got to water the seeds planted and I need not say more.
This caught my attention for sure. If you click on the photo, you can see Joe's conclusion.....a 43 tooth sprocket makes his bike go faster with less work compared to a 37. Nice.
Saturday morning Jake and I busted south to Elk River for the short notice race there. It was good to see everyone and check out the trails again. I have raced there once before back in the BLAST years. Things went pretty good. I never felt like I got to a high limit. The second lap was definitely smoother than the first lap knowing what to expect on the trail. Had a nice train going with the Nature Valley guys. Should of tried to hang with Sam longer early on but whatever, good time riding. Felt like doing a few more laps when we got done. Jack Hinkens took the expert option nicely at the end, passing his two team mates, Barry and Tom Miller and was riding hot. He will be burning it up this year for sure. All the road work has been training. Tom had the move of the day when he waited for me to get back on trail when I took the finish option instead of lap route after first lap. Good form Tom.
Jake was happy with his race. Had fun enjoying the flowy and wasn't worried about result. Racing Cat 1/expert this year right off the bat. Planning on easing into the season with US Nats and Cheq. the big races. Use all the other races for experience and good racing fun. On MNSCS conference calls, I discussed doing shorter distance for JR CAT 1/Expert riders for the MNSCS but there aren't enough riders so the longer races this year will be an adjustment and something to ease in to. The dirt jump track is a big part of his "training" and with school etc, time on it has been limited. Once school wraps up, there will be more time for catching air.
Other team riders: Trent Warner riding very nice.
Bjorn Adelsman getting in to it this year. Dad Bruce taking all the fine photos of course.
Jake drove from Staples back home. That was nice. The road trips should go a bit better this year. No off road excursions.
Rest of the weekend we were entertained by two of the nephews and niece Madealine. Loaded everyone up in the truck this morning and drove out to the woods while Jonell and her mom drank coffee all morning. Dropped Jake off at the new singletrack near Twin Lakes and he blew it out. The rest of us threw sticks in the water and tried to get wet. It is amazing how much entertainment you can have with a pond, culvert, flowing water and something you know that might get you into trouble.
Fly living up to his name.
Jake and I rode a hot lap this afternoon taking turns pulling each other and pushing the pace. We took nice chunks of time off our previous fast laps. Then rode the new stuff we built last Fall. Pretty soft yet but should harden in time. Beautiful afternoon in the woods. This week we will start working on the new loop with goal to be done by Labor Day weekend.
Jonell's mom spent the night and all day with us and Jonell's dad coming over later for Mom's day supper with my Mom as well. Rodney picked up Jon's electric and played some Johnny Cash nicely. Look at him draw attention from the ladies in the house. Forget the one liners that if posted would get us all in trouble. Jonells' mom sporting the lid all day like she said she would.. kids made it at Moosejaw this year.
Later entertainment saw Rodney balance a fork and spoon with a match. Lit the match at both ends, the fire burned out but the fork and spoon remained balanced on what stick remained.
The coffee we brought home from Mexico has a nice kick to it.
