Main events the past week include Jon's team taking 3rd place in their home tourney, Jen's birthday on Monday where we were given insight on Jack's future and Jake's first ski meet in St Cloud on Tuesday.
Out of five games in the tourney, the only loss came to Crookston en route to third place overall. Crookston had a player that was 6"1". Just a giant for a seven grader. Pretty solid player for that size with a wicked shot. Not as hard as Mason's though. Three of the players on the Crookston Jon plays with in the summer so good to catch up with some of those parents for some good hockey chatter. All the DL parents had to help cover working the games. Jonell did concessions for her shifts and I was in the penalty box doing the book. I tried to dress proper but end of each day I was chilled to the bone. Sunday afternoon we were toast. First thing Jon does when he gets home is go on the rink.
Monday we had birthday party for Jens. For the first time ever in 15 years of having birthday parties for the kids, girls were invited and attended. Not just one but five. When Jonell was ready to send out the invites, she asked Jens "are you sure you want to invite girls" "of course mom, they are my friends" Darn right. It was -8 at dusk but didn't stop the kids from going out, dressed proper and hitting the rink. Four on skates for the first time ever so that was awesome.
Making gingerbread houses near the end. Could of used a few more hours but was a great party. Fun kids. Jack was leading the entertainment charge for sure and Jonell and I said we can both see him being a counselor at a camp or something. Had the kids rolling, singing Happy Birthday like ducks and cats, meow, meow.... had to be there.
Tuesday Jake had his first meet of the year in St. Cloud at the donut at Riverside. I don't think I have ever been at a ski meet as cold as this one. Air temp was -7 when I left and the wind rolling off the old man was vicious. Nice job to all the kids that raced. Love ski race atmosphere. Skating stud Sam Anderson of St Cloud Tech blew off the front after a half lap and Jake tucked in behind another Tech skier before making a move on the last climb and taking third. Fellow DL skier Dylan was in fifth for a nice representation of DL for the first meet. With Bemidji canceled this weekend and not able to get in to the Mt Itasca race today, not sure when the next race will be. Short notice at Elk River?!?!
Kyia Anderson at the meet. You can always count on Jake and Kyia for a smile when the shutter snaps but this was more like "take the stinking picture, we are freezing"
Last time I took a pic of Jake and Kyia it was 90 degrees warmer. US Nats at Colorado. Super cool Super D course in the background. Jake and Kyia are the only (current) Minnesota riders to score podium finishes at US Nationals in the Super D.
Speaking of riding, brand new Maplelag/Paramount team rider Eric Thompson was racing at US Cross Natz this past weekend. Eric scored a 11th place in stacked U23 field and made the podium in Collegiate. Nicely done Eric. Keep the wheels moving!
