Quite a storm that moved through. Beautiful. About as good as it gets unless you don't like snow, cold and wind. All good in my book though unless there is loss of life etc. which is obviously sad. Unfortunately, we missed out on the action with only a dusting to add to the snow we already had. We had to pull the plug on this coming weekend ski camp, not so much because of lack of snow on the trails but the lake not being 100% ready for high volume of skiers, like 250+. Cold temps have settled in though and we should make some solid ice these next few days and be good to go for next weekend with current snow transformed and some packing next week to help set it up.

Drilling holes on Monday to check ice depth.

The ice is about as good as it gets, clear and solid, but we were measuring 3 to 4" and wasn't thick enough to take out a snowmobile and grooming equipment.
The cold days have been great flooding the ice skating rink. I have the barrel stove cranked up in the warming house to keep the hoses dry. Probably one of my favorite places at Maplelag. Dead quiet, nice and toasty warm and the roar of the fire is awesome. Need to move in a old lazy boy chair like the old school warming houses.

Last night we skated on the rink for the first time, even though it was -10 with a stiff wind making it feel close to -25. Nothing like the sound of pucks hitting the metal on the goal, trees popping in the woods, smoke pouring out of the chimney and the sweetness of the cold air. Just the few newscasts and radio announcers I have listened to have been absolutely brutal. Saying only one day in the next 6 days it looks like any outside activities. People get brainwashed thinking they can't step out without walking 10 steps and curling over and freezing to death. Even some of the trail reports saying in a roundabout way it will be too cold to ski. Come on. As many have said before, no such thing as cold weather, just bad clothing. Bundle up, right attitude and get out there.
