One week ago, pretty much at this moment, I was on my way to the emergency room in Detroit Lakes. I was on my way over to the lodge on my bike, like I always am, to put the dogs in the "cathouse" and pick up some bacon at the lodge freezer for some breakfast burrito action the next morning to fuel up for a ride at Cuyuna and take a half day off to burn off frustration from paying 100 thousand in taxes that day. The dogs picked up scent of some critter, steered off course so I went around the cathouse to chase them down and ka POW! I was down for the count stunned and trying to figure out what happened. I ran in to a temporary shepherd hook we had staked on the ski trail for a wedding a few weekends back. My hands were all wet and realized I was bleeding pretty good. I hoped back on my bike and weaved back to the house and yelled out for Jonell. She came up from downstairs and said "we got to take you in" I was bleeding out my nose, mouth and hacking up blood and my nose was most likely broken. Got to the ER and they put me in a neck brace and I had some xrays and c scan after getting asked if I was under the influence of drugs or alcohol (no) and if I was on a bike that you "pedal". They wanted to give me nausea drugs, antibiotics, pain killers, and a tetanus shot but I didn't see a reason for any of it and hate putting anything in to my system that I don't have to, so passed. I was close to throwing up and a result of a concussion the doc said I incurred.

No pictures taken at the ER or post accident of a shiner and swollen nose but drips of blood on the bike. I guess I figure there are folks a lot more worse off than I am to be posting pictures of something minor, really, and lucky it wasn't much worse. I have recovered pretty quick and waking up with a stiff neck and some brain fog each morning is manageable. The ride to Cuyuna didn't happen obviously. Not sure if I will be mountain biking any more this fall. Roller skiing and running on tap and riding the trainer and ready for the snow to start falling now.

The fact I have both eyes to enjoy the most incredible sunset this fall under a rare still evening last week is much to be thankful for and thank God each day for everything I have. Thanks to Jonell for being the best nurse possible last week.

I very much appreciate your perspective on life, Jay. Thanks for sharing.

And I'm also glad this incident wasn't worse than it was.

We all hang by a pretty thin thread.
