This morning we woke up to winter. Just a few inches but always nice to see white the first time this year. It was a bit unexpected as not forecasted. Probably most meteorologists have no clue it snowed around here. Made for challenging driving Richwood to Maplelag. The first snows, to me, are always the most interesting to drive on with the ground/roads not being frozen and generate the least exposure so people aren't always ready for it.
Winter sports are starting to crank up with Jon and Jens busy with hockey. Jon made the Bantam A team and Jens is still playing "Mites". Pretty much a daily trip to town. Jon has late practice and has to be their early so I usually sneak a rollerski or mtb ride in before catching the end of practice.
We didn't have ice til a bit later this fall so the boys practiced shooting in one of the rooms in the basement of the lodge that had a "snipers edge" hanging from the ceiling.
Jens was the only one to dress up for Halloween and went all out with the girl costume. It was a riot.
Peter logged his last day of the season, taking advantage of the dry fall and getting a early jump on leaf removal. No one has even come close to Peter and leaf raking.
Most of the summer Peter spent weed whacking 4-5 hours a day. Peter is down in Florida now, will be there until mid April I imagine, walking the beaches telling people about Jesus.
Last week I finally made it up to Waubun barbershop for the first time for a haircut. Max, 82, has the shop there. With the profession he is in, Max knows pretty much everyone in these parts and where they live. He pretty much cuts hair now because he loves to do it. He is an avid outdoorsman and had some good duck hunting stories to share. Probably the most interesting comment he had was how the trumpeter swans are scaring a lot of ducks away. "They rule the lakes and hog the feed so other waterfowl can't come in" Hadn't heard that before and would make sense to me seeing how many trumpeter swans we have in the area and so little ducks.
Sneaking in a few fall projects before the snow flies. There hasn't seem like much down time this year.
Deer hunting is capping the peak of hunting this season but we haven't been out much. I walked the trails one morning this week and Jens and I sat out for a hour at dusk. Pretty quiet in the woods. The word from the woods is there are no deer because of wolves. I have seen wolf scat on the trails and very little if any deer droppings. Supposedly the drop a load 13 times a day so with those odds, you think you would see something. Another tidbit floating around is deer ticks and lyme disease are so bad now because turkeys have increased in population and visiting the area more frequently. The kids have been shooting a few squirrels and last weekend cooked up three and ate them. Tastes just like pork Jack said.
Few more outings of duck hunting. Jon and couple of his hockey buddies went out all day, not much luck but nice to see them out in the woods enjoying nature and learning.
