MEA 2017

Hunting during MEA has been a tradition as far back as I can remember. I was 13 or 14 when first starting having time off for MEA. Usually it was just Thursday and Friday. Some years even Monday was added. Recently, including this year, Wednesday was added as the days off.

Wednesday morning we were greeted to a fantastic sunrise after spending a night out under the stars, another tradition we've been doing in the fall. We were fortunate to have perfect weather. Basically dry. It didn't cool down enough to frost so we avoided the dampness.

Stoking the fire in the morning, awake and waiting for the sun to come up.
The next days Jens had some friends out and they had some success. The above photo includes Gadwalls and Widgeons which turned out to be the only day we saw that species during the fall. Personally they are the best eating out of all duck species.
Thursday morning. The boys set up in a different spot from the previous day because of wind and thinking the gadwall gang would be back but it was all ring bills and grouse on the way back in through thew woods.
The boys cooked up most of the duck they shot, freezing the rest. Prepared various ways. Great part of the whole process and experience.
Jack and nephew Ripley helping with some wood chores in the afternoon.
Lucas splitting the fresh cut.

Paddling with Jack.

Lucas and Jens slept on this during the overnight. No mattress or pillows. Lucas said after a hour, the body finds a good spot and slept the whole night.
We wrapped up the weekend, celebrating Jonell's birthday with a trip to Fargo and some good times.
