A couple times a year I get requests to tune up a pair of wood skis. We still have quite a few guest using wood skis which is great to see. Wood skis are perfect on days like today (-10 and cold dry snow)

A beautiful ski. Pointing nicely I might add to the Velonews article on cross natz five years back, autographed by Dan Swanson who made the photo presence a couple times that year I think.

Whenever I open up the can of impregnation, I always think of Bob Frauson. Bob was a park ranger in Glacier Park and we would have him come up to Izaak Walton Inn and talk about his days of the 10th Mountain Division, serving in the war in Italy and his years as park ranger in Glacier. It was always a treat to talk to him and I even got to ski with him a few times.
He would do a slide show and talk about five climbers that died trying to climb Mt Cleveland. Anyways, Bob would always start his presentation with a can of pine tar, asking the guests if they knew what it was and would joke the Norwegian boys put that behind their ears to attract the girls.

The wind on Saturday combined with the warm weather on Saturday did a most interesting thing I don't believe I have seen in flat country before. The wind was causing small snow balls to form and they were pinwheelin' not only off the roof but on the flats.

Thinking of Glacier and backcountry, if you saw this happening on steep slopes, it was time to get out of there as slide was more likely to happen. The balls would keep building and create enough load to release a slab. In the spring if we had fresh snow then sunny weather, you were almost guarentee to see avalanches on the south facing slopes up on the divide.

A mix of arenas this weekend for Jon's games. Friday at the Sunmart arena which is like a converted warehouse. Not the most favorite of places for some but the game was intense and if there is a sheet of ice, all good. Then Alexandria yesterday which has to be one of the nicest rinks in northern MN. The Bemidji arena was very nice but Alex has it complete with jerseys from all players that have played D1, current Central Lake Conf. standings, 3 tier behind the net viewing, and a weight room at the top. The ice was a bit soft but again, sheet of ice, good game. On the way back noticed Deer Creek is half way there. If they had a small creek running through they could be just like Pelican Rapids. The deer is happy anyways.

Jay, saw the snowballs on the roof yesterday and thought the Richard's boys were responsible. Thanks for the explanation.

They are pretty rare. I remember seeing them once when I was a kid in Idaho. My grandpa told stories of seeing them over 3 feet in diameter.
Anyway, very cool.
I thought the same thing Steve. Jack had been out skiing and skied by the house and thought for sure he was throwing snowballs up there. I asked him and he said no so I was head scratching. Skiing this afternoon and also noticed on the driveway I noticed some and thought it had to be of Saturday's conditions. Thanks for the link Richard. When we lived out west I don't think I ever saw them larger than a foot. But that was gravity assisted, not wind related.
