Jonell and I made it down to Puerto Vallarta Mexico last weekend for four days. Deb the cook said we needed vanilla so we figured we better get down there. Pure 100% Mexican vanilla is some of the best in the world. We use it in quite a few recipes at Maplelag. Brought home about $150 worth and comments from customs agents are always good. We had never gone in May before. Like other trips when just the two of us, we don't do much other than relax. I brought the bike down again for some riding and scored on free transport for it. It was definitely hotter than I can ever remember and the big thing was not cooling down at night. Most mornings the heat index was in the mid 90's so I only ended up riding the first two mornings. The heat seem to bring on some of the Lyme symptoms so keeping chill was in order.
As always, beautiful sunsets every night.
We stayed at the Hotel Rosita like we always do. A simple, traditional hotel in the original old part of town, complete opposite of the all inclusive set ups which we don't go for. We know most of the staff and its nice to go to something familiar and friendly. No air conditioning though the afternoon breeze off the ocean was the best. Visited the same restaurants because of the outstanding food and the staff is all the same and they remember us by name. There is very little turnover and service is top notch. We eat very little Mexican food. Italian and Asian top the lists. PV is second only to Mexico City in ethnic restaurant variety.
The tourist season was over so not many people. I would say most of the people were Mexican of course, and rest 2-3% mix of North Americans and Euros.
The two rides I did were along the Rio Cuale up in to the mountains. This truck has been parked out here for as long as I can remember.
The second day was the longest ride, riding up into the madre. Crazy some of the trucks that drive up there. You could here this guy coming a long ways away, Jake braking big time.
You can ride forever going up and down the mountains. From Rosita I head south for just a few minutes than head east to the hills and within 10 minutes you are out of the city and 20 minutes completely away from civilization, for the most part. I rode up to this point the second day and turned back, flatting on the rocky terrain down. The longest ride I have ever done, 7 years ago maybe, was way back in the distance of the above photo. Rode almost three hours out than took this road off to the side that went down to a small village. Was incredible. Stopped in a store to have a water and there was a school and watched the kids in the playground. The people there pretty much lived off the land and was very peaceful.
Short sections of singletrack in between the switchbacks. The freride jumps were still there.
Dinner on the go?
Beach grill action.
A new hotel in the old part of town. Built to maximize the number of rooms facing the setting sun and ocean and each room back is slightly higher than the one in front of it.
Jonell said this was a Jay Richards park job.
Somehow I don't think the sign is cutting it. Believe it or not, Jonell and I met in Tijuana while in San Diego during a track and field trip at Concordia. A group of us went down there and I shake my head every time thinking about it. Would never go down there today.
My mom had the boys with help from a babysitter and met up with my sister and her four boys in Bemidji for the weekend for some goofing around. Jake hooked up with Matt Lee for a mtb ride on area trails. Jonell's parents had the Yoda dog for the weekend. Thanks to all for that. We had some good memories and a nice break.
