Weekend capped off a great MEA break. It was the first weekend with no guests at the resort since early May.
Had an opening to sneak up to Fargo to check a Force game, (USHL hockey). Mainly wanted to watch former DL player Tanner Lane.
Friday up to the lake cabin to help take in the dock. Couldn't ask for a nicer day for late October considering it could be 34 degrees rain/snow/wind this time of year.
Saturday was Jonell's 40th birthday. Maplelag's chef Deb stopped over in the morning. Had to take a picture of Jonell and Deb having coffee Saturday morning because there are maybe 2 or 3 Saturdays out of the year this might happen.
Jonell was adamant not to have a big party, did that at 30, and her choice was to go to Itasca State Park for biking, blading and roller skiing to the headwaters from the main entrance. Again, couldn't of been a nicer day. Between the six of us, we probably have been to the park 50 times but never together as a family. Got a few stares walking around in ski boots.
Jens ready for snow.
Picnic lunch time. As expected, it was pretty quiet but still good to see a handful of folks enjoy one of the most beautiful parks in MN.
Going down we stayed on the bike path but was a little rough. Came back on the main park rd and was one of the best surfaces I have roller skied on. The last 5 times I have been in the park has been in the winter and the road is usually covered nicely with ice and snow. Now I know why Lars Ellefson does most of his roller skiing here. Hoping to get back to interval that big long hill.
Birthday dinner. Entertainment during, free like always. Couldn't of been a better day.
Sunday morning we went out duck hunting before church and pleasantly surprised to have some action with a loner coming in textbook. Pretty sad to get excited about one duck come in to the decoys perfectly but for reasons I won't get in to, duck hunting just isn't the same. Growing up, MEA always was considered the time to go duck hunting. Back in the 80's, cousins, uncles and their friends would come up and we would have 10-15 people hunting ducks around the Island at Island lake and maybe a group at the pass on Twin Lakes. There were would be times the skies were black with ducks and a absolute hoot. Afternoons spent grousing the woods and if weather was right, back out for a evening shoot. My cousin and his friends were playing hockey, but even then, playing at Edina, they had the time off. Anyways, kids got tired I am sure hearing of stories past.
The kids had a good time in the morning, wanted to go out late Sunday afternoon. The little weather we had in the morning pushed through so conditions were a little tranquil for ducks but was still great to be out in nature for the beautiful sunset and observe two deer swimming from the island back to main land. I have never seen this before but know they do it if pushed by something. Wolves?
